His father Peleus was a brave warrior and later married the beautiful sea goddess,Thet is. At the wedding of Peleus and the sea goddess,to which most of the gods were invited, the goddess of discord,Eris,feeling angry atnot being invited, threw among the guests a golden apple bearing the words“For the fairest” and stirred up a bitter quarrel whichled in the end to the Trojan war.

So much did he love her that he decided not to remarry after the death of his wife. But one day an oracle? from Delphi prophesied that he would be killed by the son of Danae.He felt so upset that his love suddenly changed to fear and hatred. To avoid the disaster he built a tall bronze tower,wherein he shut Danaeup with her nurse.he kept the key of the tower himself,and left only the roof open for Danae to take an occasional look at the blue sky above. One bright sunny morning Danae felt a childish joy at the sight of the clear,blue sky and longed for freedom when a golden shower of sunlight shot through the open roof and spread all over her.A wave of happiness spread all over her,and Zeus himself stood before her in his splendour? and won her.
阿刚斯是个有100只眼睛的看守,他能看到头顶上一圈的任何东西。他睡觉时,一次只合上两只眼睛,其他98只眼睛总是睁着。所以要把阿刚斯看守的东西偷走是不容易的。    ?Argus was a watchman with a hundred eyes,set in a circleall around his head.When he slept,he closed only two eyes at a time;the other ninetyeight were always wideopen.So it could not have been easy to steal away anything that Argus was watching.

A shepherd on Mt Ida,Paris gave the apple to Aphrodite because she had promised too btain for him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world.

He pierced the baby' s feet? and tied them with ropes. Then he turned the baby over to the care of a fellow shepherd who happened to be the servant of the king of Corinth. The child was given the name of Oedipus,He was brought up by the childless royal couple as their sonand successor.The prince had never doubted that the king wasnot his real father until one day he heard others talking about his parentage. Deeply troubled,he went to Delphi to require about his birth.There he was warned by Apollo not to return to his native country,because,should he do so , he would kill his father and marry his mother. The frightened young man turned his back on Corinth,determined not to return while his supposed parents lived.
阿卡同酷爱打猎。他每日都穿越森林,搜寻猎物。而就在这个下午,他四处奔波颇感疲劳,因寻找水而偶然来到这片泉水旁。这样,他就惊奇地发现水中沐浴的阿尔特弥斯。恼火的女神无法息怒。她将泉水溅到猎手的脸上。水落在他身上后,阿卡同转眼就变成了一只牡鹿。恰在这时,阿卡同听到了猎狗的嚎叫,猎狗们向他扑来,他突然惊慌失措,拔腿逃跑。而那群被女神逼疯了的猎狗们则在后面穷追不舍。阿卡同拼命狂奔,很快就上气不接下气。感觉自己肯定会死去,他就一下躺在地上,不想再起来了。猎狗赶上了从前的主人,将他撕成了碎块。    Actaeon loved the hunting.He had been searching the woods every day.On this particular afternoon he felt so tired with running about that he,by accident,came over to the springin search of water.He was thus surprised to find Artemisba thing.The angry goddess was not to be calmed.She splashed water in the hunter's face.As soon as the water drops fell on Actaeon,he was changed into a? stag .Just at that moment he heard the barking of his team of fifty hunting dogs.They were coming up to him.He was suddenly seized with? fear ,and presently ran away.The dogs,all driven mad by the goddess,ran after him closely.Running as fast as his legs could carry him,Actaeon was soon out of? breath .Feeling certain that he 1was to die,he dropped to the ground and made no further attempt to get up.The dogs came nearer to their former masterand tore him to pleces.

These women had one toothand one eye between them,so Perseus grabbed the tooth and theeye from them and forced them to tell him the truth. This the grey women did,and one night while flying across the sky theyoung man found Medusa sleeping on a rock. Flying down,hestruck off the head of Medusa and turned back to the land where he had left his mother.

珀尔修斯杀死墨杜萨之后,提着她的脑袋翻山越海四处飞行。夜晚降临时,他来到日落之处,地球的最西端。他很想在这里休息过夜。这是阿特拉斯国王的王国。阿特拉斯长得五大三粗,天下无双。他拥有成群的牛羊,没有来自邻帮或敌人的侵犯。不过,他最引以自豪的是他的果园。那儿在金叶的虚掩下,金树枝上挂满了金苹果。珀尔修斯对阿特拉斯说,“我是来作客的。我的父亲是宙斯,我杀死了墨杜萨。我来是想找个休息的地方和充饥的食物”。然而,阿特拉斯想起古时候的预言说过,有一天,宙斯的一个儿子将夺走他的金苹果。于是,他回答道:“走开!你自吹自擂的光荣业绩和高贵血统一类谎话都救不了你的命”。说着,阿特拉斯便动手想把珀尔修斯赶出去。珀尔修斯发现巨人力大无比,他对付不了,便说:“既然你看不起我对你的友谊,那就请你勉为其难,接受我的礼物吧”。他转过脸去,高举起墨杜萨的脑袋。阿特拉斯顷刻间化成了石头。他的胡须和头发变成树林;双臂和肩膀变成了峭壁;头成了山顶;骨头成了岩石。他身体的每个部分都不断膨胀,终于成了一座大山。根据神祗的心愿,天体及其群星落在他肩头,由他来背负。    After the killing of Medusa,Perseus,carrying her head with him,flew far and wide,over land and sea.As night came on,he reached the western limit of the earth ,where the sun goes down.Here he would gladly have rested till morning.It was the kingdom of King Atlas,who was bigger than all other men.He was rich in flocks and herds and had no neighbor or rival to invade his country.But his chiefpride was in his gardens,whose fruit was of gold,hanging fromg olden branches,half hid with golden leaves.Perseus said tohim,“I come as a guest.I claim Zeus for my father and I killedMedusa.I seek rest and food.”But Atlas remembered that anancient prophecy had warned him that a son of Zeus should one day rob him of his golden? apples .So he answered,“Go away!Or neither your false claims of glory or parentage shall protect you” ;and he attempted to drive him out.Perseus,finding thegiant too strong for him,said,“Since you value my friendship solittle,please accept a gift”;and turning his face away,he heldup Medusa's head.Atlas was changed into stone.His beard and hair became forests,his arms and shoulders cliffs,his head asummit,and his bones rocks.Each part increased till he becamea mountain,and(such was the pleasure of the gods)heaven with all its stars rests upon his shoulders.
偷窃天火之后,宙斯对人类的敌意与日俱增。一天,他令儿子赫菲斯托斯用泥塑一美女像,并请众神赠予她不同的礼物。其中,雅典娜饰之以华丽的衣裳,赫耳墨斯赠之以说谎的能力。世上的第一个女人是位迷人女郎,因为她从每位神灵那里得到了一样对男人有害的礼物,因此宙斯称她为潘多拉(pander:意为煽动)。    After the stealing of fire,Zeus became increasingly unkind to men.One day he ordered his son Hephaestus tobuild an image of a beautiful maiden out of clay.He then asked the gods and goddesses to award her with different kinds of gifts.Among others,Athena clothed her in an attractive coat and Hermes gave her the power of telling lies.A charming young lady,she was the first woman that ever lived.Zeus called her Pandora.Because she had received from each of the gods and goddesses a gift.The gift was harmful to men.
从此以后薏姑没有再露面也不让任何人看到,慢慢地她就消失,只剩下她的声音。    After this, Echo never came out and allowed herself to be seen again ,and in time she disappeared till she became only a voice.
以后他天天都到溪旁注视他看到的面孔,一面又哀悼他妹妹,最后众神为他感到很难过就把他变成了一朵花。    After this,he came back to the spring day after day and looked at the face he saw there,and mourned for his? sister? until,at last,the gods felt sorry for him and changed him into a flower.
埃杰克斯是位身材魁梧、骁勇善战、但头脑迟钝的人。当特洛伊战争即将爆发时,他率领军队从萨拉米斯到达奥尔墨斯加入了希腊军队。作为一名为希腊事业奋斗的最可信赖的斗士,他被派去保卫靠近特洛伊的希腊军营边界。战场上,他因作战勇猛而出名。阿基里斯死后,他成为两个最有可能获得阿基里斯的盾甲的有力竞争对手之一。另一名对手是奥德修斯。最后,他的对手胜利了,并得到了盾甲。埃杰克斯悲伤至极,无法自拔,最终结束了自己的生命。奥德修斯为了得到盲人底比斯的忠告而来到阴间;埃杰克斯的幽灵冲着他直皱眉头。在阴间,由于受到前世痛苦记忆的折磨,埃杰克斯选择了做一头狮子。    Ajax was a man of giant stature,daring but slow.When the Trojan War was about to break out he led his forces from Salamis to join the Greek army at Aulis.As one of the trustiest champions of the Greek cause,he was given thejob of guarding one end of the Greek camp near Troy.He was noted in the battlefield for his bravery and courage.After Achilles' death he became one of the two hot contestants for the dead hero's shield and armour,the other being Odysseus.When the weapons were finally judged to his rival,Ajax went mad for grief.Unable to get over the hardships,he took his own life.When,in order to seek the advice of,Odysseus came to visit the lower world,the shade of Ajax frowned uponhim.In the lower world Ajax chose to be a lion,guided clearly by the bitter recollection of his former life.
